Snippets are generated based on how relevant the content on a page is to a user’s search query.

Types of Snippets

There are several types, including regular snippets, rich snippets, and featured snippets, each with unique features.

Regular Snippets

“Regular snippets” in Google refer to the brief descriptions or summaries under each search result link on a search engine results page (SERP).

When you search for something on Google, you’ll see a list of results with titles, URLs, and short pieces of text.

These snippets are designed to give you a quick idea of the webpage, helping you decide whether it’s worth clicking on.

Our goal as bloggers is for Google to pull our content as the snippet, getting people to click through to our post/site.

The text in a regular snippet is usually pulled directly from the webpage and includes the most relevant information based on your search query.

Unlike “featured snippets,” which appear at the top of the search results and are designed to directly answer your question, regular snippets are simply brief excerpts from web pages that match your search terms.

Rich Snippets

Rich snippets, also called “rich results,” enhance search results by displaying additional information.

This extra data usually comes from the structured data in a page’s HTML, such as reviews, recipes, or events.

For instance, a recipe-rich snippet can show ratings, cooking time, and ingredients directly in the search results.

This makes the result more appealing and informative, increasing the chances of user engagement.

You often use specific schema markup in your HTML code to implement rich snippets.

Rich snippets are crucial for attracting attention and improving click-through rates in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Featured snippets appear at the top of Google’s search results, providing concise answers to user queries.

How to Rank for Featured Snippets With SEO

To rank for featured snippets, you must focus on accurately identifying snippet types, using schema markup, targeting specific keywords, providing valuable content, maintaining an ideal word count, and answering questions directly.

Here are practical steps to optimize your content for featured snippets:

Identify the Type of Snippet You Want to Go After

What type of snippet do you want? Aim for one or all three.

  • Featured snippets come in several types: paragraphs, lists, tables, and videos. 
  • Paragraph snippets provide a concise explanation, often between 40-50 words. 
  • List snippets, including items in a numbered or bulleted format. 
  • Table snippets organize data for easy reading, while video snippets display relevant video content.

To determine the best snippet type for your target keyword, analyze the featured snippets for similar queries. 

Tools such as Ahrefs or SEMrush can help identify these snippets. 

Tailor your content to match or improve upon the existing format.

Use Schema

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content better.

By adding structured data to your HTML, you can enhance the visibility of your page in search results.

Use schema types like Article, FAQ, and HowTo to guide search engines in categorizing your content.

Use plugins like Rank Math and Yoast to make this non-technical. “Create” by Mediavine is great for recipes, and “WP Table Builder” is great for tables.

I use Rank Math and it couldn’t be easier to use.

Use The Target Keyword

Place your target keyword naturally within the text. Start by placing it in the title, headings, introductory sentence, and first 100 words of your content. Ensure it fits seamlessly into your text without keyword stuffing.

Look who currently ranks in the top ten positions, and analyze what they are doing so you can outrank them. 

Answer the Question

Go beyond basic answers by providing comprehensive and valuable information. Include examples, related statistics, and real-life applications to enhance user understanding. 

Make your content the go-to resource that addresses user questions more effectively than competitors.

I’m often featured in snippets simply because I’m great at answering questions directly in a clear, concise, no-nonsense manner. 

Use 40-50 Words

Featured snippets often highlight answers that are 40-50 words long. 

Keep your paragraphs tight and informative. Clear and concise writing trumps run on sentences. 

For list and table snippets, be concise but comprehensive.

Use sub-bullets if listing items, ensuring each bullet is a brief yet complete answer to the query.

Don’t Bury the Lead

The initial sentences of your content should directly address the user’s query. 

This immediate response can help search engines recognize the relevance of your content for featured snippets.

Begin with a clear, specific answer. Avoid unnecessary introductions. 

Directly addressing the user’s needs increases the likelihood of being chosen for a featured snippet.
