How Do Bloggers Actually Make Money
How do bloggers actually make money? I get this question a lot, not only from family and friends but from random strangers after they ask what I do for a living.
Bloggers actually make money.
Some bloggers make A LOT of money.
You would be surprised that some travel and recipe bloggers make six figures monthly. A. Month.
That is right.
Even I was taken aback when I discovered this years ago.
Now, when people ask me what I do for a living, I respond, “I own an online business.”
That stops them from asking further questions.
But they don’t get it when I tell them “I’m a blogger.” It prompts them to ask a lot more questions.
When they hear “blogger,” they think I make no money and just play games all day.
Let’s get to the myriad of ways bloggers make money.
7 Ways Bloggers Actually Make Money from Content Creation
While there are more than 7 ways that bloggers make money online, below are the most common.
1. Affiliate Income
Monetizing a blog through affiliate income is one of the most straightforward and speedy methods to start earning.
I managed to monetize my travel blog within six months, despite having only 10K pageviews, and was amazed at how quickly it happened.
So, it’s definitely possible.
By the sixth month, I was earning over $100 from a post about recommended tours in a specific region of the country.
The secret to earning from blogging lies in getting 5 to 10 posts (with affiliate links) to rank in the top three spots on Google.
In just six months, using SEO strategies, I had 20 out of 100 posts ranked in the #1 spot. This is why I was able to generate income.
Not all of these top-ranking posts were affiliate posts, though.
You need to create supporting content for your affiliate posts. It’s like the saying goes: “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
Creating pillar content and focusing on a specific topic with strategic interlinking will boost a significant portion of your content to the top of search engine results.
Here’s my strategy for successful affiliate marketing:
- While focusing on pillar content, find affiliate programs related to your niche and apply to them. Most programs accept you right away, though some may have a waiting period or requirements before acceptance. However, many do not. Most of my income came from just two programs.
- Be selective: Choose programs with a good reputation that offer products you would endorse even without compensation. It’s easier to promote something you genuinely believe in. Readers can tell the difference.
- Create dedicated posts reviewing these affiliates and services.
- Link these posts within the pillar content you wrote initially.
- Interlinking: Robust interlinking is crucial for good SEO. It helps Google understand your site’s structure. Use contextual links when connecting posts to make your site coherent.
- Include explicit calls to action, like “buy now!” or “this tour has a five-star rating from 143 reviews,” in both affiliate and non-affiliate posts.
Affiliate commissions vary widely, from cents to thousands of dollars. The product or tour you promote doesn’t need to be expensive for you to earn a significant amount.
The earnings add up.
Promoting a $30 tour can generate substantial income if that post consistently ranks number one.
Most of the tours I recommend are under $200, but they collectively generate significant revenue.
And you don’t need a large number of posts to rank.
Remember, I earned affiliate income from just five posts dedicated to tours. Tour sites were my most lucrative affiliate programs.
I used reputable companies like Viator and Get Your Guide to make affiliate sales.
Affiliate income is one of the easiest ways to monetize a blog quickly.
2. Ad Networks
Bloggers who want to monetize their blogs usually have one goal:
Get into Mediavine or Raptive.
Getting into one of these ad networks to place ads on your blog is as close to passive income as you can get with running a blog.
That’s why so many bloggers try to get into ad networks.
Caveat: it’s not entirely passive because traffic must increase or at least stay steady. But bloggers actually make money from ads, which is the most passive way to monetize a blog.
When I started monetizing my blog with ad networks, I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the revenue increased.
Ad networks like Google AdSense, Mediavine, and Raptive are excellent options for bloggers seeking passive income.
The key to maximizing earnings from ad networks is increasing your blog’s traffic.
The more visitors you have, the more impressions and clicks your ads will receive, directly boosting your income.
For example, you could earn hundreds of dollars with just 50K pageviews per month.
The income can become quite substantial as your traffic grows to 100K, 200K, or more.
To succeed with ad networks, focus on creating high-quality, engaging content that attracts and retains readers.
Use SEO strategies to drive organic traffic and promote your content through social media and other channels to increase visibility.
Once your blog gets significant traffic, applying to premium ad networks like Mediavine or Raptive can increase your earnings.
These networks typically offer higher RPMs (revenue per thousand impressions) than standard options like AdSense, Ezoic, and SHE Media, meaning more money for the same amount of traffic.
Making money from ad networks is a scalable and effective monetization strategy.
As your blog’s traffic grows, so will your ad revenue, making it a highly lucrative option for bloggers aiming for long-term success.
But it can take a good year to get into Mediavine or one of the other high paying ad networks.
And that’s with consistent publishing, SEO strategies, and keyword research.
3. Create and Sell Digital Products
Bloggers can generate substantial income through digital products such as courses, workbooks, ebooks, printables, templates, and spreadsheets.
Your blog is the perfect platform to launch online courses, allowing your readers to learn directly from you.
Ensure your course has a well-structured curriculum with multimedia elements like videos, PDFs, and interactive quizzes.
Digital products are effective in any niche. Really.
Even if a topic like SEO has been covered extensively, your unique take and personality can make your version stand out. Your audience appreciates your individuality, so don’t hesitate to share your insights.
One effective digital product creation method is to identify the problems your audience faces and offer solutions through a course, workbook, ebook, video, spreadsheet, printable, or template.
You don’t need to charge exorbitant prices to achieve a six-figure income; you just need 1,000 true fans to purchase what you offer. Reaching 1,000 true fans is entirely possible.
For instance, over a weekend, I wrote an ebook on making money on Medium, sold it to my 14k followers on that platform, and saw the earnings quickly accumulate.
Building a loyal fan base is crucial.
To cultivate a fan base:
- Start by writing a blog in your area of expertise.
- Focus on a specific niche and work on driving traffic to your site.
- After consistently writing and publishing content, consider what you can create to sell to your audience.
- Set a launch date and complete your product.
If you’re new to this, start with something small like a spreadsheet, template, or short ebook.
Once you see the potential income, you’ll be motivated to create something bigger, like a comprehensive course.
4. Sponsored Content
Sponsored posts are articles or blog posts that you write on behalf of a company or brand.
They typically start at $300 and increase based on traffic, deliverables, and site notoriety.
In these posts, the goal is to craft engaging content that aligns with your content style while incorporating the sponsor’s messaging.
- How to Get Started:
- Identify brands that align with your blog’s niche.
- Reach out with a proposal detailing your blog’s reach and demographics.
- Key Considerations:
- Ensure transparency with your readers by disclosing sponsorship.
- Maintain your authentic voice to preserve reader trust.
5. Services and Coaching
Consulting and coaching services can be highly lucrative for earning income by offering personalized guidance and training.
Everyone has a unique learning style, and many people thrive with one-on-one support from experts or “gurus” who have achieved the success they aspire to.
Personalized coaching allows you to tailor your services to meet individual needs, enabling you to charge premium rates based on demand.
Take my experience with Pickleball, for example.
I play for fun and want to improve, so I’ve taken group and private lessons. The private lessons are far more effective because the instructor can focus on my specific weaknesses.
I know bloggers and entrepreneurs who charge thousands for one-on-one coaching sessions.
While I might not pay that much myself, plenty of people will and do!
It’s wise to demonstrate your initiative and dedication before investing in a private coach. Blog for six months to a year and then invest in coaching.
If you’re an authority in your niche with notable success, you have the power to ignite transformative change in your clients’ lives.
Seize this opportunity to offer valuable insights and guidance that can propel them towards their dreams.
Recognize the value of your expertise and time, and charge accordingly for your personalized services.
Coaching is a highly personal service where you provide focused support and share your expertise to help clients achieve their personal or professional goals.
Your role involves analyzing their challenges, offering actionable solutions, and empowering them to make tangible progress.
6. Brand Collaborations
Brand collaborations involve working directly with companies to create content for your blog.
This partnership is about product mentions and developing a deeper relationship to boost brand awareness.
- Strategies for Success:
- Choose brands that share your values and appeal to your audience.
- Work on mutually beneficial projects, such as giveaways or exclusive content.
- Best Practices:
- Set clear expectations and terms in a contract.
- Measure the success of collaborations through engagement metrics or sales data.
By carefully selecting sponsors and collaborating on meaningful content, you can add value for your readers while monetizing your blog through sponsored content.
7. Developing a Subscription Model
A subsciption model is the most profitable way to monetize a blog. The subscription model is booming right now because it’s effective.
As an economics major, I remember learning about “sunk costs.”
In economics and business, a sunk cost is an expense that has already been incurred and cannot be recovered.
People often don’t cancel subscriptions due to inertia.
They might sign up for a membership to access a library of 200 videos but have yet to watch any.
They’ve already paid (a sunk cost) but haven’t benefited, so they keep the membership for another month, promising themselves they’ll watch the videos soon.
You get the idea.
This model is highly lucrative, even if the monthly fee is just $10. You can generate significant income due to the concept of sunk costs.
When you create a membership site, you’re building a community around your content.
Members pay a recurring fee for ongoing access to exclusive materials.
For example:
- Monthly Webinars: Host webinars on niche topics, available only to members.
- Resource Library: Provide high-quality resources like videos, templates, spreadsheets, and ebooks.
You can create a sustainable and profitable income stream by offering continuous value and exclusive content.
Start Making Money With These Blogging Strategies
- Niche Down: While appealing to a broad audience might be tempting, focusing on a specific niche is more effective. By targeting a particular group, you can better cater to their needs and significantly increase your chances of success.
- Interlinking: Interlinking on your blog involves creating links between your own posts, which helps improve site navigation for readers, enhances SEO by spreading link equity, and keeps visitors on your site longer by guiding them to additional relevant content.
- Invest in Your Blog: Contrary to popular belief, successful blogging isn’t free. To elevate your blog’s quality and appeal, invest in essentials like a domain name, a professional designer, and useful resources such as online courses.
- Implement an SEO Strategy: You must focus on search engine optimization to ensure your blog is easily found. Conduct keyword research, optimize your site’s structure, and work on building backlinks to improve your search engine ranking.
- Outsource Tasks You Dislike: Blogging involves numerous tasks, and it’s unrealistic to handle everything yourself. Delegate the tasks you dislike or don’t have time for to free up your schedule, allowing you to focus on the aspects of blogging you enjoy and excel at.
- Invest Your Time: Success in blogging requires a significant time investment. Dedicate yourself to writing high-quality content, promoting your blog effectively, and engaging consistently with your audience.
- Be Patient: Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. Understand that achieving success takes time, and be patient as you focus on producing excellent content. Gradually, your efforts will yield positive results.
Why do bloggers make money?
Blogging is a lot of work, and bloggers should be compensated. If they’re helping a company sell a product, they deserve a fair percentage of that product.
As a blogger, I can attest that it’s not just a hobby. I run several blogs and put in over 50 hours of work per week. It’s a business, plain and simple.
Some bloggers run small teams, and some run large teams of ten or more.
Once you figure out how to monetize a blog and the money starts rolling in, you can scale.
To scale, you need help, so many bloggers hire virtual assistants, writers, and blogging managers to run their businesses while they then manage their teams.
You can and should be compensated if you provide valuable content to your readers.
When you provide value, your audience will find you.
