What Are Backlinks and Why Are They Important

What are backlinks and why are they important to SEO?

Getting backlinks is part of a solid SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy, sometimes called off-page SEO.

They are links from one website to another, acting like votes of confidence in your content.

The more high-quality backlinks your site has, the higher it will rank in search engine results, making it more visible to potential visitors.

Let’s dive further into this question of What are backlinks and why are they important?

What Are Backlinks?

backlink is a hyperlink that one website receives from another.

It’s also termed as an inbound or external link.

It’s essentially getting one of your posts, as a link, embedded on another’s high-quality website

I’ll give an example of a backlink because some learn best this way, myself included.

I wrote the most compelling article about the 17-mile Drive at Pebble Beach. (⇐hint: this link is a backlink for my travel blog, so in this article, I’m giving my travel blog some SEO juice).

The content in my 17-mile Drive at Pebble Beach article is *so* up-to-date and helpful that the LA Times added a link to this amazing post in one of their online articles about Highway One falling into the ocean.

Had this actually happened, my site (this is a new travel blog I started as a teaching tool) would get a massive boost in authority, and that article would get a huge boost in Google rankings because the LA Times has a domain rating of 92 (the rating is from 1 to 100).

A site with a 92 rating is impressive; it has a ton of authority.

What is Domain Authority (DA)?

Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages (SERPs).

This metric ranges from 1 to 100, with higher scores indicating a greater likelihood of ranking higher.

Moz DA checker gives you three free DA checks per day.
Check any website’s DA with Moz’s Free Domain Authority Checker

Moz calculates DA by evaluating multiple factors, including linking root domains and the number of total links, into a single DA score.

Their free service allows three checks per day.

So Why Are Backlinks Important…

Link building is important for SEO because when your site acquires high-quality links, it sends Google a positive signal that your content is valuable and trusted by other sites.

The more of these high-quality backlinks your blog receives, the faster your site will grow in all good things:

  • Domain rating
  • Domain authority
  • Trust (E-E-A-T)
  • Rankings
  • Traffic.

What is E-E-A-T? E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.

Search engines view backlinks as a vote of confidence, which can help your site rank higher in search results.

Backlink building plays a critical role in SEO by influencing search engine rankings.

Here are the stats via Ahrefs of a popular travel blogger’s website, Nomadic Matt; he has 332K backlinks, which is why he is a ton of authority in the travel niche.

Backlinks are so important, you should start building them as soon as you publish your first blog post.

We recommended getting several backlinks per post.

Quality links will boost your website’s ranking (if sites link to your homepage) or the rankings of a specific page on your website.

Start building them today.

3 Types of Backlinks

There are several types of backlinks that you should be familiar with.

  1. Nofollow Links: These links have a special tag instructing search engines not to pass any link equity.
  2. Do Follow Links: These links allow search engines to follow them and pass on link equity.
  3. Sponsored or Paid Links: You pay for links often tagged with attributes like “sponsored” to indicate their nature.

1. No follow

nofollow link includes an HTML tag (rel=”nofollow”) that signals search engines to ignore this link for ranking purposes.

Such links don’t pass on any link juice, meaning they won’t directly boost your SEO. Google doesn’t crawl or index no-follow links.

However, they can still drive traffic to your site.

These links are often used in comment sections, forums, or sponsored content to avoid spam and manipulation.

2. Do follow

do follow link allows search engines to follow it and pass equity, contributing to your page’s rankings.

Do-follow backlinks play a crucial role in SEO and SERPs.

Inbound links marked as do follow instruct search engine crawlers to follow them, thereby evaluating the linked page’s credibility and relevance.

This process helps in building authority and potentially enhances the rankings of the linked site.

When another site links to yours with a do follow attribute, it signals to search engines that your content is relevant and trustworthy.

This boosts your site’s authority, making do follow links highly valuable for SEO strategies.

3. Sponsored or Paid Link

Sponsored or paid links are links that are paid for by an advertiser. The company pays the website owner to place a link on their website.

They should be tagged with specific attributes like rel=”sponsored” to indicate their nature to search engines.

These links don’t usually pass on link equity but can be useful for driving targeted traffic to a company’s page.

Transparency is key to ensuring your compliance with search engine guidelines, so make sure to mark these links as “sponsored.”

Good vs. Bad SEO Backlinks: What’s the Difference?

If you just started blogging, you may not have yet heard the terms “White Hat SEO” and “Black Hat SEO.”

White Hat SEO is “good SEO.” Black Hat is “bad SEO.”

White Hat SEO (Good SEO)

White Hat SEO refers to ethical practices that align with search engine guidelines to improve a website’s rankings legitimately.

This includes creating quality content, using proper HTML structure, and gaining organic backlinks.

Black Hat SEO (Bad SEO)

Black Hat SEO, on the other hand, involves using deceptive tactics to manipulate search engine algorithms, such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, and buying links.

These methods can result in penalties and are against search engine guidelines.

Be really careful. Using these tactics can get your site penalized. Getting low-quality backlinks can hurt your rankings and authority with search engines.

Best Practices for Link Building

Creating great content and engaging in effective outreach strategies can significantly improve your link-building efforts and, thus, your rankings.

These are not just practices but necessities to enhance your website’s visibility.

1. Creating Link-Worthy Content

To attract backlinks, your content must be valuable and relevant.

The organic way to get backlinks is when others find your content useful and naturally link to your site to add value for their readers.

This can take some time.

Produce high-quality content such as in-depth guides, original research, and compelling infographics.

These types of content assets are more likely to be shared and cited by others.

Ensure your content is engaging, informative, and aligned with your target audience’s interests.

Consistently updating your blog with fresh and relevant content also helps in maintaining its appeal.

2. Write Guest Posts for Other Bloggers

Guest posting on relevant blogs allows you to reach new audiences and earn valuable do-follow backlinks.

Identify blogs that accept guest posts and propose well-researched topics that appeal to their readers.

Creating a spreadsheet to keep track of the blogs and dates you’ve contacted will help you stay organized and focused.

Ensure your content is unique and adds value.

This approach builds backlinks and establishes you as an authority in your industry.

Outreach is an essential component of link building.

Begin by identifying websites and bloggers within your niche.

Craft personalized emails highlighting the value of your content and why it would benefit their readership.

Follow up politely if you do not receive a response.

Utilizing tools like Ahrefs can help identify potential link sources and track your progress. Remember, building relationships is key to successful outreach.

3. Broken Link Backlink Strategy

Broken link building is a technique in which you find broken links on other websites and suggest your content as a replacement.

Start by identifying sites within your niche and using tools like Ahrefs or Check My Links to find broken links.

Ahrefs’ Site Explorer allow you to check for broken outbound links on any website.

Once a broken link is identified, contact the webmaster and inform them of the dead link.

Provide your content as a valuable alternative.

This not only helps the website owner improve their site but also earns you a quality backlink.

Effective outreach is key in this strategy, so make sure your communication is clear and helpful.

4. Link Swaps

Link swaps involve exchanging backlinks with other website owners.

Choose partners whose websites are relevant and reputable to avoid penalties from search engines.

Propose a mutually beneficial arrangement where each party gains valuable links without compromising content quality.

Use this strategy sparingly and ensure that the exchanged links are contextually appropriate and add value to the reader’s experience.

Please be careful using this strategy and do it sparingly.

Google is really smart, it’s a machine, and you can’t outsmart it. You can get penalized for using link swap groups because they technically violate Google’s Terms of Service.

Still, many bloggers use them to get backlinks.

5. Subscribe to HARO (Now Connectivity)

HARO (Help A Reporter Out) is a FREE platform that connects journalists with experts for their stories.

This not only boosts your search engine optimization but also enhances your credibility as an expert in your field.

The Impact of Backlinks on Web Traffic

Backlinks significantly affect web traffic by driving visitors from other sites and enhancing search engine rankings.

This section explores their role in increasing both referral and organic traffic and building trust and authority for your website.

Referral Traffic and Its Benefits

Backlinks can drive referral traffic to your website.

When users click on a backlink from another site, they are directed to your content.

This not only increases your page views but also brings in potential customers who may be interested in your products, services, affiliate links, and content.

Referral traffic can have several benefits:

  • Higher engagement: Visitors referred from relevant sites are more likely to spend time on your site, reducing bounce rates.
  • Conversion opportunities: If the referring site is in the same industry, the users coming from these links are more likely to convert.
  • Brand visibility: Referral traffic helps increase brand exposure, making your business more recognized within your industry.

The Correlation Between Backlinks and Organic Traffic

Backlinks play a crucial role in improving organic traffic.

Search engines like Google use backlinks as a key factor in ranking algorithms.

High-quality backlinks signal to search engines that your content is valuable and trustworthy.

Studies show a direct correlation between the number of backlinks and higher search engine rankings.

More backlinks lead to better visibility in search results, driving more organic traffic to your site.

Improved organic traffic means more potential leads and opportunities for conversions without paid advertising.

Builds Trust and Authority

Backlinks help build your website’s authority and trustworthiness in the eyes of both search engines and users.

When authoritative websites link to your content, it acts as a vote of confidence, indicating that your information is credible.

Building authority through backlinks involves:

  • Earning links from reputable sites: Backlinks from industry leaders carry more weight.
  • Consistent link-building efforts: Regularly acquiring new backlinks helps maintain and grow your site’s authority.
  • Creating high-quality content: Valuable and informative content is more likely to attract backlinks from other sites.

Remember, trust and authority are key components for long-term SEO success.

Enhances Search Engine Rankings

Search engines view backlinks as endorsements.

The more quality backlinks your site has, the higher it will rank. This can significantly boost your site’s visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs).

For instance, a study found that pages with a higher number of backlinks tend to rank higher for relevant search queries.

Having top rankings not only increases organic traffic but also establishes your site as a go-to resource.

In summary, effective backlink strategies can lead to increased traffic, improved search rankings, and enhanced credibility for your website.
