How Long Does It Take to Make Money From a Blog

How long it takes to make money from blogging depends on several factors:

3-6 months: With dedicated effort, some bloggers may earn a small income within this period, mainly through affiliate marketing or ad networks.

6-12 months: For consistent bloggers with a well-crafted marketing strategy, the second year can mark the start of more significant income.

1-2 years: Building a substantial income often takes this long, especially if relying on organic traffic and SEO.

You can make significant amounts of money from blogging.

Some travel and recipe bloggers make 20K — 50K or more monthly.

Nomadic Matt makes at least 100K per month and employs a team of ten or more.

Is It Realistic to Make Money Blogging?

Yes! I have made money blogging.

It can be very lucrative.

Many bloggers make a full-time income from blogging, but it’s a full-time job.

Lucrative niches are in travel, recipes, beauty, and financial services.

These dedicated bloggers who make a substantial income have been blogging for a long time.

Ad networks, affiliate marketing, paid newsletters, digital products, and paid subscription models can make you a lot of money.

Key Factors That Affect the Time It Takes to Monetize a Blog

Some key factors affect the time it takes to monetize a blog.

Here are just a few:

1. Does your niche have affiliate potential?

Affiliate marketing is one of the quickest ways to monetize a blog.

I monetized a travel blog within three months with 15 posts; that may have been luck; one of my road trip articles took off, and I also utilized the social media platform Flipboard to gain traffic.

Some niches work better for affiliate marketing; one is the travel niche.

Within the travel industry, there are many affiliate programs to join that don’t require anything but signing up.

Two of those programs are Viator and Get Your Guide.

These are tour companies. It’s pretty straightforward to write a post with tour reviews targeting a specific location.

Here is a great example of that:

Is Catalina Island Worth Visting? 15 Reasons Why It Is.”

Nearly all niches have affiliate potential, some more than others.

Other good ones include recipe, financial, and beauty blogs.

So, to monetize a blog quickly, consider what niche has affiliate potential.

2. Which Topic Can You Write 100,000 Words Quickly?

If your goal is to monetize a blog quickly, consider the number of words on your site instead of the number of posts.

It doesn’t matter how many blog posts you have before launching; you just need to get a lot of words on your site.

Aim for 100,000.

Now, 100,000 words may seem like a lot.

And it can be depending on your time and attitude.

However, if you set a schedule to write four blog posts in a week, you’ll have 100,000 on your site in less than six months, and you will be surprised at how far you’ve come when you have 100,000 words.

You will see traffic increase. Sessions increase. Users increase. Email subscribers increase.

You will be so happy about this, you will want to write another 100K words in one month.

With tools like Chat.GPT and Jasper AI, you can have 100,000 words on your site in no time.

I’ve done it. I did it without using AI.

You can too!

3. High-Quality Content

Have you heard the Steve Martin quote, “Be so good they can’t ignore you?” Cal Newport took it from Steve Martin.

It applies to something you’d like to succeed in, like blogging.

The best way to stand out online is to produce high-quality content.

What does this mean?

It means giving your audience valuable, up-to-date, current information so they stick around, keep reading, and come back when they need more information on the niche you serve.

“Be so good they can’t ignore you?”

— Steve martin

If you write a post that is so good, better than the top ten search results in Google, you’ll find an audience and your true fans.

Be the authority in your niche.

4. Have the Right Attitude

Your attitude will affect whether you find success or not.

Blogging isn’t easy, even lazy-girl-blogging.

The most challenging aspect of running an online business — a blog you monetize — is the constantly evolving SEO landscape.

Having the right attitude makes hard work easier for several reasons:

  • When you have a positive attitude and are passionate about your work, the work becomes rewarding.
  • This internal drive makes it easier to put in the effort, which is called intrinsic motivation.
A femal sitting at a desk smiling.
  • Understanding and believing in the purpose behind your work gives you a clear reason to push through challenges.
  • The right attitude helps you see the bigger picture and focus on your goals.
  • A positive attitude fosters resilience, allowing you to bounce back from failures and setbacks, which can happen often in blogging.
  • If you don’t have resilience, you won’t keep going.

I’ve had so many failures in the past ten years. Most had nothing to do with me but things outside of my control, like algorithms changing.

It can be heartbreaking when a business you put your heart and soul into doesn’t work out because of a Google update, but with the right attitude, you’re more open to change and willing to adapt.

This flexibility makes it easier to navigate obstacles and find new solutions.

How to Start a Profitable Blog

Here are the top SEO strategies I use to monetize blogs quickly with organic traffic and affiliate marketing.

Zero-Volume Keywords

One key strategy I apply to monetize blogs quickly is conducting thorough keyword research using the best SEO strategies.

This is a crucial step that every blogger should be well-informed about.

Let’s delve into the basics.

Ever heard of Domain Authority or Domain Rating?

These are crucial factors in your blog’s SEO game.

Bloggers who sell blogging courses telling you DA is not important are bloggers with a high DA.

DA is important.

The higher your DR or DA, the easier it is to rank for broad keywords with high volume, such as “best hotel in Los Angeles.”

When you start a blog from scratch, you have zero DA and zero DR. This means it’s harder to stand out among all the giant blogs.

However, there’s a way around this.

We can focus on zero-volume keywords.

A zero-volume keyword, or long-tail keyword, would be “best hotel in Los Angeles with a view of Griffith Park.”

Less volume but also less competition.

Despite their name, these keywords still have a significant search volume, but with less competition, giving us a fighting chance to stand out and rank.

With tools like Keysearch, we can find these zero-volume keywords and rank well.

When we rank at the top of Google using the zero-volume keyword strategy, we get traffic to our site.

That’s that goal.

Using the zero-volume strategy is the quickest way to get traffic to a new site.

To check the difficulty and volume of a keyword, I use Keysearch; it’s the cheapest and best keyword research tool on the market.

Prioritize Speed over Perfection

One big mistake I see bloggers make is spending hours making their site look “pretty.”

Lazy Girl Tip: Most users see one post of your site and not the whole package.

Users come to your site via posts you write that rank at the top of Google, not usually through your homepage.

So why do most people spend hours and hours getting their homepage to look perfect?

Don’t.

Instead, focus on writing great content and make your site fast!

Once you have all that stellar traffic rolling in, spend time on perfecting your homepage.

Make it pretty.

Or don’t, it doesn’t really matter.

What matters a lot is site speed.

Fast Site Speed

Creating a site that loads quickly is a crucial part of technical SEO.

There are a couple of things that improve site speed, which I use on all my blogs.

Use Lyrical Host to host your site and the Kadence theme (it’s free with WordPress), and don’t upload too many plugins.

👩‍💻 Save 10% on Lyrical Host plans with code “LAZY10” here

Adding too many plugins adds bulk and slows down site speed.

You want load times to be at most 3 seconds.

Why?

Because it’s been shown users bounce when load times take longer than 3 seconds.

Three seconds or less is the maximum load time recommended by many experts.

Beyond this, users may start to feel impatient, and the likelihood of them abandoning the site increases significantly.

When users leave your site (bounce) quickly, this sends a negative signal to Google; we don’t want that.

To check site speed head to PageSpeed Insights.

Niche Down

Please niche down, and then niche down again before you even purchase a hosting platform and download WordPress.

Lazy Girl Tip: Check out my Lyrical Host Review before deciding which hosting platform to use for your business. By choosing the right one from the start, you can save time and money.

Proper SEO requires something called interlinking.

Interlinking is a big part of effective SEO and gaining traffic.

A well-thought-out interlinking strategy is well worth the pre-planning.

A hack to make interlinking more manageable is to keep your niche intentional and specific.

Come up with two content pillars, also known as content silos. They should be related but different.

Here are some examples:

  • For this blog, lazygirlsguidetoseo.com, my two pillars are SEO and Writing. Head to my homepage and check out my menu bar at the top.
  • For a travel niche website, it could be California and Luxury Travel. Or Solo Travel and Greece. Or Best Travel Credit Cards and European Travel.

Each pillar is centered around one topic.

Only start with two because you need to write at least 30 or more posts (to make an impact) for each pillar.

So start with only two.

You may consider adding more pillars later after the first two are well-established on Google.

Google and any audience you are targeting prefer a site that knows what it’s about and is niche focused.

7 Ways to Monetize a Blog

People who discover what I do are immediately curious and want to know how I make money from blogging.

There are so many ways to monetize a blog.

The most passive way to monetize a blog is through ad networks, like Mediavine and Raptive.

These are two of the best, but they have acceptance requirements. When you get into one, you are literally making money while you sleep.

This is only possible for the brand-new blogger once you reach certain traffic metrics.

To get accepted into Journey by Mediavine, you must reach 10K sessions.

Other ad networks require less traffic but aren’t worth it. They won’t make you much money, can break your site, and turn away readers.

Why place ads on your site if they don’t make you much money? I don’t recommend it.

Instead monetize other ways.

1. Affiliate Income

Making affiliate income from a blog is the easiest and fastest way to monetize a blog.

I monetized my travel blog in less than three months with hardly any pageviews, and I was genuinely shocked at how little time it took.

I posted my first post on March 19 and made $100 by mid-June with fewer than 15 posts on my site.

So, it’s possible.

Here is a screenshot of my Viator account.

A picture of Viator dashbaord to answer the question, How long does it take to monetize a blog? It took me three months.
Screenshot of my Viator dashboard. I made $119.98 from a brand new travel blog (with zero DR and zero DA) in less than three months. Not too shabby.

While this might not be possible for every blogger, it is possible.

Affiliate income is the quickest way to make money from blogging.

I made this by working a few hours a day, about 4 to 5 days a week, while building another blog (I don’t recommend this).

2. Digital Products

This is where bloggers earn a lot of income.

Digital products include courses, workbooks, ebooks, printables, templates, and spreadsheets.

Your blog provides a foundation to launch online courses, enabling your readers to learn directly from you.

Design your course with a structured curriculum, including multimedia elements like videos, PDFs, and interactive quizzes.

3. Developing a Subscription Model

This is perhaps the most lucrative way to make money from a blog. The subscription model is big right now because it works.

When you create a membership site, you’re establishing a community around your content.

Members pay a recurring monthly fee for regular access to exclusive materials.

For example:

  • Monthly Webinars: Host webinars covering niche topics, accessible only to members.
  • Resource Library: Compile high-quality resources like videos, templates, spreadsheets, and ebooks.

Like Substack, you can develop a weekly, monthly, or whenever-you-want-to-send-it-out newsletter for your dedicated fans who pay for your content monthly.

This is the paid newsletter model. It’s lucrative, but not fast.

It can be very difficult and time-consuming to establish. You need a large number of email subscribers.

Even with my 14k followers on Medium, it was nearly impossible when I tried to convert them to my Substack.

You have to have a big following or a famous name in your niche to get this to work.

The problem is when you don’t have email subscribers.

5. 1:1 Services

Consulting and coaching services can provide a substantial income through personalized guidance or training.

Everyone learns differently.

People love one-on-one help from “gurus” or people who have the success that other people desire.

With one-on-one help, you can charge whatever that demand demands.

6. Sponsored Content

Leveraging sponsored content is a key strategy when exploring options for monetizing your blog without resorting to ads.

This involves creating content that is paid for by a sponsor to promote their brand, product, or service.

Again, this takes time. You need high traffic volume to make money from sponsored content.

These posts aim to get the company traffic, so they should be well-written and SEO-optimized.

Sponsored posts can be part of a paid campaign, like a press trip, or they can be a singular deal with a brand/company.

7. Brand Collaborations

Brand collaborations involve working directly with companies to create content for your blog.

This partnership is about product mentions and developing a deeper relationship to boost brand awareness.

How to Make Money from Blogs Wrap-Up

As you can see, most of the above options take time, except for affiliate income.

Start there; it’s the quickest way to monetize a blog.

Final Word: How Long Does It Take to Monetize a Blog

So, as you can see, many factors go into determining how long it takes to monetize a blog, like the amount of time and dedication you have, but it also depends on your SEO strategy and other factors.

The timeline for seeing financial returns can vary widely depending on numerous factors such as niche selection, content quality, audience engagement, and marketing strategies.

While some bloggers may earn a modest income within six months, others might take a year or more to see substantial revenue.

The key is remaining committed to creating valuable content that resonates with your audience, continuously adapting to the ever-evolving digital landscape, and meeting SEO challenges head-on.
